📘🎮 My favorite email of all time
That feeling when you "chuck it all and totally change direction"
I’ve posted this email on several times already but I’m doing it again because today is DAY ONE of my new adventure (and this is my blog and I’ll do what I want).
It’s my favorite email of all time.
In 2006, I finished an internship. I sent a Farewell email and got this reply.
16 years later, when I need the motivation, I come back to this. I’ve printed it many times. I’ve hung it on the fridge. And for the past 6 months or so, I’ve used it as a bookmark.
When I first read this email I was young (23) and stupid, now I’m old(er) (39) and (still) stupid, but I understand what she’s saying like never before. So I’m going to type out the email now.
I really want you to read this as if it is me talking to YOU, because you never know who is contemplating a big change and needs to hear this.
Thank YOU <your name here>! I’m sure you will be MOST successful wherever you go and whatever you do.
Just keep this in mind (advice from an old “seasoned” worker’s experience) Make a career out of something you love! But don’t hesitate to chuck it all and totally change direction if something else seems like something you’d love to try.
It is NOT about the money - don’t let it become about the money (don’t get in debt to a point where you don’t have options).
There is absolutely nothing worse than coming to a job you hate! When/if a job ceases to give you pleasure/fulfillment/satisfaction, QUIT! Do NOT hesitate!
Talent and ambition like yours does NOT abound! People like you (energetic, intelligent, patient, respectful, dedicated, eloquent, creative, flexible, and ambitious) are a VERY RARE commodity these days! There is absolutely no reason you cannot choose to work wherever you want doing whatever makes you happy!
Have faith in yourself! So many people these days do not. Rely on yourself! Be true to yourself! And above all… be happy!!!
Keep in touch and if ever there is anything I can do, just shoot me an email or give me a call!
(Or leave a comment on my substack.)
Bravo! In the middle of the big career change here. Thanks for this pep talk!!!
